Telecom conference looks south

Michael N. Zarin of the U.S. State Department and Dr. Johan K. Norvik of Hewlett-Packard will deliver keynote addresses at the fifth annual Latin American Telecom & Information Technology Conference Wednesday in Richardson.

Mr. Zarin is a member of the State Department's policy planning staff and Dr. Norvik is director of marketing and solutions H-P's Americas Network and Service Provider Business Unit.

Other speakers include Gregorio Canales, undersecretary of international commerce for the State Government of Nuevo Leon, Mexico; Patricia J. Paoloetta, partner at Wiley Rein & Fielding; Alejandro Nieto, managing director of Latin America at EXE Technologies Inc .; Raj Rajagopal, senior policy analyst with the Public Utility Commission of Texas; Mario Carotti, vice president of marketing and communications at NII Holdings Inc., and Avi Levy, senor vice president of marketing at TTI Telecom.

Boy Scouts honor Perot

Ross Perot recently received the Silver Buffalo Award for distinguished service to youth from the Boy Scouts of America at its annual national meeting in Philadelphia.

It is Scouting's highest commendation for service to youth and has been awarded each year since 1925. Mr. Perot's contributions to scouting include more than two decades of sponsorship of the Circle Ten Council 's Eagle class.

Miller sets address

Mayor Laura Miller will address the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce's membership breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Doubletree Hotel Lincoln Center.

Sponsors are Carter & Burgess Inc. and Ebby Halliday Realtors.

Challenge goes racing

Dallas Challenge, a nonprofit agency that provides intervention services to at-risk teens, will hold its "first big fund-raising event" at 6 p.m. Friday at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, says Zach Cannaday, Dallas Challenge spokesman and development officer.

The event will take place in the Pavilion Garden with the admission fee of $30 including a full buffet. For reservations, call 972-566-4680.

North Star Awards

The North Star Recognition was recently presented to Bob Buford, Ebby Halliday Acers, Skywire Software, Business Access LLC, Sabre and Allegiance Telecom Inc. The honors were bestowed at the second annual "Spirit of Entrepreneurship: Ask What You Can Do for Texas!" event.

Allegiance Telecom, the Dallas-based phone company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection May 14.
