Business Access Opens New Austin Online Community

Achievers attend orientation, take computers home

Dallas-based Business Access, working in conjunction with WorkSource Austin, opened a new online community in the Capital City on April 13 when the first group of @chievers attended orientation and received their personal computers - all in the same day!

BA Program Director Hiram Quiñones (left) conducted the orientation, briefing the newcomers on the finer points of the Business Access In-Home Learning Program.

Among topics covered in a wide-ranging session: How to access and complete training courses; ways to create a resume using BA's Resume Builder; how to work with Instant Messaging, how to benefit from a wealth of topical onsite content created specifically for BA @chievers, and more.

Kimberly Bunting, President and Chief Executive Officer of Business Access, not only attended the opening, but also helped transport the truckload of computers from Dallas.

"It's great to see everyone excited about taking their computers home and taking training online," she said. "Computers and the Internet open a whole new world for our families. We're happy to be a part of that." (Bunting is pictured here with Anson Green of Workforce Business Services at the Texas Workforce Commission.)

When the orientation was done, Quiñones and BA Business Development Manager Dyalan Beamon offered detailed instructions on how to install the new PCs once @chievers got them home. The briefing included helpful hints ("Don't set your tower up on the floor, where dust or bugs can be a problem"), plus tips on how to hook up the computer to a phone line in order to access the Internet.

As the presentation wound to a close, the real payoff of an eventful morning and afternoon was taking shape in the parking lot, where James Howell, Chief Operations Office for Business Access, was unloading a truck full of personal computers for the newest members of the BA community.

Before the installation briefing was completed, Howell made sure that each @chiever already had a new PC and monitor waiting outside the WorkSource center. Individual packages were tagged with the @chiever's name, streamlining the process of packing up and heading home to get started.

After a last bit of semi-heavy lifting, more than a dozen brand-new computers, fully equipped and ready for immediate use, were in the hands of their owners and on their way.A simple installation, and @chievers were ready to embark on a whole new way of looking at the world! By day's end, the Austin online community was up and running, as new @chievers took those first steps across the digital divide and into the limitless possibilities of life online!
